Artist Bio
Stephen Wesson is a graduate from The University of Texas with a BFA in Studio Arts. He was born in 1974 in Houston, TX. Notable among his exhibition credits is his participation in the St. Patrick’s Art Festival at Watson Galleries in Houston, TX in 2012 and The Collective Minds Show at Flatbed Press in Austin, Tx in 2025. Currently based in Austin, Wesson continues to refine his practice across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and printmaking. His work centers on the harmonious connection between humanity and the natural world, employing an approach that emphasizes materiality and form. While some of his sculptures are more functional, his focus leans towards exploring the aesthetic realm, marking a current direction of exploration in his artistic journey.
Stephen’s work demonstrates a compelling evolution from formal experimentation into deeply conceptual visual systems. Beginning with bold fields of geometric abstraction, playing with structure, fragmentation, and containment. There’s a poetic honesty in allowing things to fall apart without needing to reconstruct them—a visual metaphor for emotional states, transitions, and acceptance. There’s a strong sense of movement, systemic repetition, and subtle chaos—like circuitry, pinball, or shifting grids. Stephen’s work navigates systems both visual and social, inviting viewers to question what holds us together, what breaks us apart, and how meaning emerges in the spaces between.
